On Eagle's Wings

On Eagle's Wings
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:29-31

An Athletic Hodgepodge

It's an active Hodgepodge today. Linking up again this week with Joyce. Thank you, Joyce!

1. Are you watching the Olympics? Not too much.

Your favorite summer Olympic event?

Watching the synchronized divers, they are so graceful.

I read recently a list of the most iconic Olympic moments in history...what stands out in your mind as a great moment from some past summer Olympic games?

When Greg Louganis hit his head on the diving board, but then went on to earn the highest score that day and win two gold medals. Hitting his head was not the "great" moment, but was definitely a moment to remember. Scary!

2. Have you ever been to Rio? No.

How about the place that started it all-Greece?

Yes. We took a Journey of the Apostle Paul cruise in 2005 visiting the places of his second missionary journey and the 7 churches from the Book of Revelation. It was a memorable trip for so many different reasons. A cruise on the Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea, visiting Athens, Corinth, Philippi, Ephesus, and many other sites. It's like visiting Israel - the Bible comes alive and especially the Book of Acts. Among my favorites were the riverside at Philippi where Paul most likely met Lydia, the ruins at Ephesus, and the island of Patmos.

Parthenon in Athens

River in Philippi

Have you ever been to any of the Olympic Games in person?
No. Is that something you'd like to do? No. Have you ever met an Olympian in person? No.

I've never been to the Olympic Games nor have I met an Olympian in person. But I can't really think about the Olympics and Greece and the Apostle Paul without being reminded of what he had to say and wondering whether he had attended the games or knew a few athletes in light of what he said to the Corinthians,

3. The ball's in their court (tennis), cross the finish line (track and field), on target (archery), make a splash (diving), on a roll (gymnastics), out of one's depth (swimming)...which Olympic-related idiom best applies to your life right now? Explain.

I think right now I'm on target meaning I believe I am where God wants me to be, although sometimes I feel I am out of my depth because of the uncertainty of how I am handling things. My goal is to endure and cross the finish line!

4. What have you earned a 'gold medal' in recently?

I don't know that I deserve a gold medal, but there must be some kind of prize for keeping up with kids' schedules, grandkids, my DH doctor appointments and medications, and caring for my very old dog. Oh, now I remember. The prize is the joy of it all at the end of the day!

5. What is it (or who is it) that motivates you to eat right, exercise, and do what you can to be healthy?

Myself. It's up to me to do those things although I do have friends and family who inspire me as well.

6. Are you young at heart or an old soul? Explain.

I believe at 67 I am young at heart in my attitude, enjoying my family, and still being able to run and play with the kids. Maybe running and playing with the grandkids isn't such a big deal these days, but that's not anything my grandparents ever did with me!

7. It's National S'mores Day (August 10th)...are you a fan? Will you celebrate with a s'more today?

No. I guess I'm not young at heart when it comes to S'mores ... they are too messy. Just give me the chocolate. When we were kids, Mom always frosted graham crackers with leftover chocolate icing for us to snack on. Yummy!

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Summer is beginning to wind down and kids will be starting school soon. At 10 and 8, our two oldest grandsons have experienced more things in their short lives than I ever did until I was an adult. They flew to Michigan this past month, then came back by way of Disney world in Florida, and today are leaving for Maui. And later this year they will be going to Canada for a ski trip. Are these kids having too much fun or what?

Future diver?

Future swimmer?

Our vacations growing up were to visit relatives in Arkansas with little day trips nearby. At 14, a road trip to Six flags over Texas was a big deal. My first airplane trip was a business trip on the company plane, which was very exciting for me at age 19.

With Jack entering kindergarten, there are no babies anymore to come for spur of the moment weekday overnight visits. They will also be involved in soccer which means overnight visits will have to be carefully planned to fit everyone's schedules. That makes me sad. Happily for now, Kate and Jack are content to come stay with us and just "be." I'm savoring it as long as I can.

Getting ready to demonstrate she

can touch her head with her feet.

How does she do that?
Future gymnast?

Is there a category for cute awesomeness?

Good times!

I almost said scheduling for my gold medal answer too. I feel like I deserve a prize some days! Some of my favorite memories are visiting grandparents and I know my own girls would say the same. So glad you get to enjoy time with yours. I need some : )

I so enjoyed my visit with you today. Yes, I think Paul was very familiar with "the games." He certainly used it as a reference with understanding and knowing his readers could relate. Did you see the two USA silver metal divers the other night give their testimony that they were not defined by their sport, but by their relationship with Jesus Christ? It was so good to see these two young men speak so strongly with confidence. Your grandkids are adorable, and yes, families these days don't vacation like we did for sure. Mine have been all over the world.

Touching your feet to your head. Amazing how flexible young ones can be. Makes me hurt just thinking about trying it.

I enjoyed your Hodge Podge answers today. I feel I am young at heart too but sometimes my body betrays my age. How exciting to take a cruise and follow Paul's footsteps. Great photos of the guys. Have a great day.

What an awesome scripture to tie to today's HP. What enjoyable answers. And, how on earth did your GD do that? It hurt me to look at it. Happy rest of the week!

Cute grandkids! And that granddaughter's photo! Looks like she's going to break in half. They scare me when they do stuff like that, until I remember that I did that too when I was a kid and much more limber. That cruise sounds wonderful. It would be great to follow in the footsteps of Paul. Have you seen the series with David Suchet, 'In the Footsteps of Saint Paul'? I think that's what it's called. It's really good, but not as cool as it would be to have been on that cruise. What a wonderful memory that must be!

Beautiful blog post today. I am visiting you from the Hodgepodge. I especially enjoyed how you brought in the travels of the Apostle Paul with the Olympics. It never occurred to me that he might have attended the Olympics! And I loved the photo of the riverside location where Lydia may have met Paul. Wasn't she a "seller of purple"? I quilt and so fabrics are important to me.

Anyway, thanks for your comments on my blog. Blessings to you!

Your grandkids will cherish all the memories they're making on their trips. They may not realize it now, but they will be priceless to them one day.

Yes!! Savour those sweet times with the little ones. They don't stay little for long. Such great memories they are making though, with all that travel. Our vacations were to a fishing camp in Canada during my teen years. We made our own fun back then without digital games and cell phones! Imagine that!! :)

Looks like lots of good times with your grands. My family didn't vacation much at all growing up. Maybe a camping trip here and there. How cool to follow some of Paul's journeys.

Chariots of Fire, it was a film about Olympic runners but was based upon a true life Christian, Eric Liddell. I know you know this movie too and love it just as much as I do!

I'm not big on sports either, but I do love the Olympics! Adorable pictures!

It sounds like these are the good times with the grand-young'uns.

Lovely pix of the grandloves! I think she can touch her feet to her head because she's young. Cause I could do that when I was young but now, my body would laugh at me for trying. Ha! I think about my grandlove growing up and having all those activities going one. I wonder if that's one reason I agreed to stop teaching and keep her every day? :)

I agree that there should be a medal for scheduling, I can no longer keep everything locked in my brain, I need several reminders a day to get everything done.
Cheers!
