On Eagle's Wings

On Eagle's Wings
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:29-31

Wednesday Hodgepodge

Today is the first day of February!! Another year is beginning to spread its wings and take flight! It's also time for another Wednesday Hodgepodge with Joyce

1. Can you believe it's the end of January? What was the best day of January 2017 for you, and why?

I think January 1 was a good day, but I don’t see it as the “best” day. It was the beginning of a new year and it began with great encouragement and hope that this will be a good year, that I will continue to wait and see what God has for me and my DH, and I will continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord as I abide in Him. January has been a good month all in all and I was glad when the presidential transition was finally complete.

2. What sounds make up the background noise in your life?

I take it you are meaning that literally, so I will say sounds of birds outside, children playing in the park behind our house, DH’s TV. When I’m in the car, the sounds are of music playing praise and worship or teaching on the radio. At home, for the most part, it is quiet and peaceful.

3. I read on the Power of Positivity website a list of ten things to drop from your life right now. They are-

anger outbursts, people who put you down, regret, negative self talk, being a people pleaser, the notion you need to be perfect, the past (but keep the lessons learned!), gossip and judgment, comparing yourself to others, and the word hate (focus on what you love instead)

Which thing on the list do you most need to drop? Are you trying or will you try?

I don’t gossip, but I do make mental judgments and I am working on that.

4. What is sacred to you?

My time in the morning with the Lord and my Bible. It is most precious to me and as I go to sleep, I am already looking forward to the next morning. When I arise, first thing I get a cup of coffee and settle down to read, pray and work on my Bible study. When we travel, or when company is here, that is something that I miss greatly and must purposefully carve out that time.

5. January is National Oatmeal month. Are you a fan, and if so how do you like it?

I grew up despising the stuff preferring Cheerios or Frosted Flakes … anything but oatmeal. But one year at a retreat, that was the only option for breakfast. Because it was served with butter, brown sugar and raisins, I gave it a try and discovered that it wasn’t bad. We now have oatmeal a couple of times a week doctored up with those things, along with walnuts. Irish oatmeal is terrific … when I cook it! I don’t care for restaurant oatmeal at all.

6. What feelings does twilight stir up in you?

Sometimes melancholy, sometimes songs about the end of the day such as Deep Purple or Now the Day is Over; mentally reviewing things that were accomplished or just saying goodbye to another day that has slipped away. Each day I am thankful that I had it and could enjoy it.

7. Something you're looking forward to next month?

I really can’t think of anything spectacular, so I guess I will be surprised. We will be going out of town for a special birthday party celebration for our son-in-law's mother which should be fun; DH will most likely be having surgery so I am looking forward to getting past that and having him be well.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I’m still trying recipes for bread. Tonight, I am working on whole wheat rolls and they are not rising. The last batch in another recipe rose beautifully, so I don’t get it. The yeast is fresh. I wonder if I didn’t knead it enough. And now they have finished baking and we sampled them with dinner, I will be moving on to the next recipe!

I also confess I watched several – not all – of the Mary Tyler Moore Show episodes aired last week. She was always one of my favorites from the old Dick Van Dyke show and I so enjoyed her show in the 70’s. But it was disappointing to me that they didn’t run the earlier shows with Rhoda Morgenstern and Cloris Leachman when Mary first moved to Minneapolis. I thought those were the better shows.

Oh my goodness! I forgot...how quickly I forget...the best day, which for me was the 20th of January. All the best with the bread recipes...I have had a few disasters with bread this past month myself culminating in the bread machine's biting the dust yesterday. Ha! Sometimes the best thing for getting through a month is to look ahead to the time past that. Have a wonderful February!

So sorry to hear of DH's upcoming surgery, but trust it will be a good thing for him. I used to make bread years ago before bread making machines. The problem was we liked to eat it too well. LOL! Have a great weekend. Loved your answer to #4.

Those are wonderful answers, Connie. Praying for you and your hubby but you know that. Do you know it is almost impossible to find a bread making machine anymore in the stores? Mine literally burned out I used it so much when the kids were young and at home.
I hope you have a great February-praying it is a hopeful, good month for you. xo Diana

I wondered the same thing about the background noise, lol. I frequently overthink these things. Haven't made bread in years because I ate way more then I should have. My kids still call it "mom's bread" lol. Have a good day!

Hi
Sending prayers for your husband. xx oo

I agree on your answer regarding twilight. I could not place what I wanted to say, you did a good job of it. When I read the question, the vision of me and my sister heading out to chase lightning bugs came to mind.

Love, Carla

When I was reading #6 I was reminded of this old song...

Just a song a twilight, when the lights are low,
And the flick'ring shadows softly come and go,
Tho' the heart be weary, sad the day and long,
Still to us at twilight comes Love's old song,
comes Love's old sweet song.

Mary Tyler Moore was one of my favorites, like you, I loved her from The Dick Vandyke show and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

We enjoy the Irish Oatmeal also! Its texture is so different that our Quaker brand steel cut oats.

I'll be praying for your husband's upcoming surgery.

I enjoyed reading your answers, today. I hope things go well with your hubby's surgery, and that he feels better, as a result.
I loved your feelings concerning twilight.

Praying for your DH's upcoming surgery...praying all will be well for him and you! I enjoyed your answers...all good, and I thought some similar to what I would say too. Not a big oatmeal fan, however, unless I cook some blueberries or canned peaches into it while it cooks..now that's good, with some cinnamon...Now I want some. You are brave to do so many bread projects. If I did that I would be really "fat"....I LOVE bread! So I try not to bake it or get really good bread too often...because I can't resist it. I love the smell of it baking...droool...Have a great day!!

Glad your eating oatmeal, it is really good for you. I make mine with unsweetened vanilla almond milk and put a tiny bit of 100% pure organic maple syrup on it. Glad you trying out some recipes. It is a bummer when they don't rise. Yes Mary Tyler Moore will be missed.....

I enjoyed reading your Hodgepodge today! Prayers for a successful surgery for your DH. Safe travels to the birthday celebration. I loved Mary Tyler Moore too and all the roles she played.

Bread is so tricky - I've been watching past seasons of the Great British Baking Show and Bread Week always seem to strike fear in the hearts of the contestants. Under-proved, over-proved, under-baked, over-baked, not kneading enough, so many things can go wrong with bread? Good luck with your attempts because there is nothing better than home-baked bread.
